would you splurge on hurricane-proof windows or just risk it?

Been thinking about this lately... imagine you're living in an area that gets a hurricane scare every year or two. You've got regular windows, nothing fancy, and they've held up okay so far. But then your neighbor down the street just shelled out big bucks for those impact-resistant windows. They're bragging about how they don't need shutters anymore, how quiet their house is now, and how much safer they feel.

But the cost difference is pretty steep, you know? It's not like buying a new toaster or something—it's a serious chunk of change. And let's say you've never had major damage before, just some minor stuff here and there. Would you still go ahead and upgrade your windows to the fancy impact-resistant ones, or would you rather roll the dice and stick with what you've got? Curious how others see this...

I install these windows all the time, and honestly, it depends on your peace of mind. Had a customer last year who'd been through a few scares—nothing major—but finally decided to upgrade. She told me afterward she sleeps better during storm season now. They're pricey, yeah, but it's not just about hurricanes...they cut down noise, improve insulation, and can even boost your home's resale value. If budget allows, they're worth considering, but if you're comfortable with shutters and your current setup, no harm sticking with that either.

Funny you mention that...my neighbor across the street upgraded to hurricane-proof windows last year, and he swears by them. He used to be the guy out there wrestling with shutters in the rain, cursing up a storm (pun intended). Now he just waves at me smugly from inside his cozy, quiet house whenever a storm rolls in.

Personally, I'm still on the fence. Shutters have worked fine for me so far, but I gotta admit, the noise reduction and insulation perks sound tempting. Plus, anything that boosts resale value is always a bonus. Guess it comes down to how much you value convenience and peace of mind versus how much you enjoy the adrenaline rush of scrambling around with plywood at the last minute...
