One thing that surprised me when I swapped out my old windows for low-e glass (in a 90s ranch, so nothing fancy) was how much less sunlight heat blasted into the living room. I also tried those stick-on reflective films in the bedrooms—cheap and honestly not bad if you don’t mind a slightly mirrored look. Anyone found a trick for sliding doors? Curtains help, but I’m not loving the cave vibe.

I get the whole “cave vibe” thing with curtains—honestly, blackout panels just make my living room feel like a bunker. For sliding doors, I tried those vertical cellular shades. They’re not cheap, but you can pull them open during the day and they actually block a ton of heat when closed. The stick-on films never looked right on big glass doors for me—too much glare. I’m still not convinced there’s a perfect solution, but the shades are the closest I’ve found so far.

Yeah, I’ve been there. Tried blackout curtains once and my dog thought it was bedtime 24/7. Those vertical cellular shades do seem to hit a sweet spot, though—pricey, but at least you don’t have to choose between privacy and sunlight. The stick-on film thing never worked for me either... ended up with bubbles everywhere and gave up halfway through. There’s always some compromise, but hey, at least we’re not roasting every afternoon.
