argon windows in hot climates - worth it or waste of cash?
Discussion options
Been thinking about upgrading my windows to argon-filled ones since they're supposed to help with insulation and energy efficiency. But I live somewhere where summers get pretty brutal, like hitting triple digits regularly. Heard from a buddy they might not hold up as well in extreme heat, something about the gas leaking out faster or something? Anyone here tried them in hot climates, and did it actually make a noticeable difference on your electric bill or comfort level?

I swapped to argon-filled windows about 4 years ago, and our summers regularly hit 100+. Haven't noticed any gas leakage issues yet - at least nothing obvious. Comfort-wise, rooms near the windows definitely feel cooler, less of that baking heat coming through. Electric bill dropped a bit too, maybe around 10-15% in peak summer months? Not life-changing savings, but noticeable enough. I'd say they're worth it if you're already planning a window upgrade anyway...just don't expect miracles.
Interesting to hear your experience, because I've been debating argon windows myself. My neighbor installed them last summer and swears by them, but honestly, when I visited, I couldn't feel a huge difference standing near the windows. Maybe it's subtle? Your electric bill drop sounds promising though - 10-15% isn't bad at all. Still, I'm wondering if the savings justify the upfront cost...guess I'll keep researching before pulling the trigger.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've been wondering about too. We moved into our first home last year (yay adulthood?), and I've been trying to figure out if argon windows are worth the hype. The energy savings sound tempting, but like you said, it's hard to tell if there's a noticeable difference just standing next to them. Maybe it's one of those things you only really notice on your electric bill?
I did read somewhere that the effectiveness can depend a lot on your home's insulation and overall setup - so maybe your neighbor's house was already pretty efficient? I'm still leaning toward giving them a shot eventually, but the upfront cost is definitely making me pause...especially with all the other surprise expenses that keep popping up (seriously, does homeownership ever stop surprising you?). Guess I'll keep lurking here for more experiences before deciding.
