Winter window woes: Which material survives the freeze?

- Heavy curtains definitely help, but I’ve had better luck combining them with that clear plastic window film - sticks right on with a hairdryer and actually cuts the chill more than I expected.
- Tried the bubble wrap thing too (my wife hated how it looked), but honestly, it worked a bit for our old basement windows.
- I hear you on the metal frames... ours sweat like crazy and nothing short of replacement really fixes that.
- Has anyone tried those magnetic interior storm panels? Curious if they’re worth the hassle or just another band-aid.

I’ve actually got a bit of a different take on the plastic window film - yeah, it does cut down on drafts, but I always find it’s a pain to get off in the spring. Maybe I’m just impatient, but there’s always that one stubborn corner that rips and leaves sticky residue. Still, for the price, I can’t complain too much.

The bubble wrap trick is funny - my neighbor swears by it for his garage windows, but my partner vetoed it for our living room after one week. It definitely works, but man, it looks like you’re prepping for a tornado or something.

On the metal frames... I hear what you’re saying about sweating. We tried running a dehumidifier nearby and it helped a little with condensation, but not enough to make a real difference. Replacing them is out of our budget right now, so we just keep towels handy and wipe them down when it’s really cold.

About those magnetic interior storm panels - I actually gave them a shot last winter on two north-facing windows. They’re pricier than the film upfront, but they went up super easy and came off clean in spring (big plus there). I wouldn’t call them a miracle solution - they don’t totally stop drafts if your window frames are warped - but they do seem to help with both cold and condensation. The look is way less obtrusive than bubble wrap or plastic film too. Only downside is you have to custom order sizes unless your windows are really standard.

Has anyone here tried just adding weatherstripping around old sashes? I did that in our upstairs bedrooms and was surprised how much warmer they felt - plus you can still open the windows if you need to air things out mid-winter. Not perfect, but maybe worth trying before investing in panels or new windows.
