Just found out my new windows might be haunted, thanks to the power company

"Thought I was losing it until I realized it was just the wood adjusting to the dry air. Humidity's sneaky like that, huh?"

Yeah, humidity changes can definitely mess with your head. Had a similar experience last fall after moving into my first house—kept hearing these faint creaks and pops around the windows. Did some digging and turns out it's thermal expansion. Basically, temperature swings make window frames expand and contract slightly, causing those random noises. Pretty common in newer installations, apparently. Still catches me off guard sometimes though...

Could definitely be thermal expansion, but don't rule out the house settling either. When I redid my floors a few years back, I swore something was off—the floorboards kept popping randomly at night. Drove me nuts until I realized the foundation was just shifting slightly as it settled into place. Newer houses (or recent renovations) often take a while to fully settle...so your windows might not be the only culprits here.

That's a solid point about the settling—I had something similar happen after upgrading insulation in my attic. For weeks afterward, I'd hear random creaks and pops at night, convinced I messed something up during installation. Turns out it was just temperature shifts causing the framing to expand and contract slightly. New windows often have tighter seals, so even minor thermal changes can sound pretty spooky until everything stabilizes. Hang in there—it usually quiets down once the materials adjust fully.

Yeah, totally agree—those tighter seals can amplify even tiny shifts. I noticed something similar after installing vinyl windows; the frames would pop randomly at night. Took about a month before everything settled down... definitely spooky at first though.

Yeah, I've seen this happen too, especially right after installation. It's usually thermal expansion—vinyl frames expand and contract more than wood or metal, so even tiny temperature drops at night can cause those random pops or creaks. If it's bothering you, you can actually minimize it a bit by checking if the screws around the frame aren't overtightened. A slight adjustment can help relieve tension and reduce noise. Usually settles down after a few weeks anyway... nothing supernatural about it, just good old physics at work.

Had a similar thing happen when we replaced our front windows last year. First few nights, I swear it sounded like someone tapping on the glass... freaked me out at first till I realized it was just the vinyl adjusting. Your tip about loosening screws is spot-on though, wish I'd known that sooner. Curious if anyone noticed more noise on windows facing direct sunlight versus shaded ones? Seems like ours facing west popped way more often.

We had something similar happen, but oddly enough, our east-facing windows were the noisy culprits—especially in the morning as the sun warmed them up. Makes me wonder if window color or frame material might also influence this...?

Had the same issue with our south-facing vinyl frames—every sunny afternoon sounded like popcorn popping in slo-mo. Switched to wood frames, quiet ever since. Maybe vinyl just hates mornings as much as I do...

Yeah, vinyl frames definitely expand and contract more with temperature swings. Had the same popping noises on my west-facing windows—drove me nuts until I shimmed them better. Wood's a solid choice though, glad it worked out for you.

Had the same issue on our south-facing windows, drove me up the wall for weeks. At first, I was convinced we had some paranormal activity going on—lights flickering, weird popping sounds at night—but nope, just vinyl frames being moody with temperature swings. Ended up resealing and shimming like you mentioned, and it's been quiet ever since. Wood frames do seem sturdier overall, glad that fixed your problem. Still, gotta admit, the haunted window theory was more entertaining...
