Figuring out how to get those window rebates from the local power company was a bit of a process, but it’s doable if you’re patient. First, I checked my utility’s website (took me forever to find the right page, honestly), then looked at their list of approved window types—turns out, not every “energy efficient” window qualifies. After that, I had to get a quote from a contractor who was on their approved list. Once the windows were installed, I had to fill out a rebate form and upload the receipts (which I almost lost in my junk drawer…).

It took about two months to actually get the check. Not super fast, but hey, free money is free money. Has anyone found a way to speed this up, or maybe a trick to make sure you don’t miss any steps or paperwork? I feel like I probably made it harder than it needed to be.

Alright, I’m trying to decide between two window options because of that federal incentive for upgrades. One’s the basic double-pane that meets the minimum requirements for the tax credit, and the other is a fancier triple-pane, higher price tag but supposedly way more efficient (and also qualifies). Both would get me the credit, but the triple-pane is like 30% more expensive.

I live in Michigan so winters are brutal, but I’m not sure if I’ll notice a big enough difference to justify the extra cost. I mean, does anyone actually see major savings on their bills with triple-pane, or is it mostly just marketing? Or maybe you went with the cheaper option and regret it (or don’t)? Curious what folks here think—would you go with the basic option and pocket the savings, or splurge for max efficiency?
