I'm trying to cut down on street noise in my apartment without spending a fortune. I've read about window film and heavy drapes as affordable options, but I'm kinda torn. Window film seems easier to install, but do they really block much noise? Drapes look cozy and might help with insulation too, but I'm worried they'll just muffle the sound slightly. Anyone have experience with either or both? Curious which one actually makes a noticeable difference.
I've tried both, and honestly, window film doesn't do much for noise. It's great for privacy and blocking UV rays, but sound-wise... meh. Heavy drapes made a bigger difference for me—especially if you get ones labeled as "blackout" or "thermal." They won't completely silence traffic, but they noticeably soften the sharper noises like honking or motorcycles. Plus, they help keep the room warmer in winter, which is a nice bonus.
Totally agree with you on the window film—tried it myself hoping it'd help with street noise, but nope, still heard every garbage truck at 6 AM. Heavy drapes were a game changer for me too. Got some thermal blackout curtains on sale last winter, and honestly, they're worth every penny. Not only did they soften those annoying motorcycle revs (seriously, why do people do that at midnight?), but my heating bill dropped noticeably. Didn't expect that bonus, but hey, I'll take it.
Anyway, glad I'm not the only one who noticed window film's limitations. At least our rooms are warmer and quieter now... small victories, right?
"seriously, why do people do that at midnight?"
Haha, right? I swear my neighborhood has a midnight motorcycle club or something. Anyway, glad you mentioned the drapes—I almost went with window film myself, but ended up grabbing some thick blackout curtains instead. Didn't completely silence the street chaos, but definitely muffled it enough that I don't wake up grumbling every morning. Plus, bonus points for keeping the room cozy in winter. Small wins indeed...
