Casement binds only in the last few inches

When a casement sash gets stiff right near closing, what clue best separates an alignment issue from a problem with the lock or operator? I’d look for whether the sash rubs at one particular corner, whether the lock engages without having to force the handle, and whether gently supporting the sash changes the resistance.

If it still binds with the lock disengaged, does that meaningfully narrow things down, or can hinge wear cause similar symptoms? I’m wary of trying to adjust anything before knowing what those signs actually tell you.
