Swapping single pane for double: worth the hype?

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually seen a bigger payoff with full window replacements in some older homes, especially where the sashes were warped or the frames had gaps you just couldn’t seal with caulk or storms. One client’s 1920s bungalow had single panes that rattled in the wind—no amount of weatherstripping helped much. After switching to double panes, not only did the drafts disappear, but their heating bill finally dropped noticeably. I do agree, though, that if your originals are solid and you’ve already done the air sealing, storms can get you 80% of the way there for a lot less cash. Condensation’s a real thing after tightening up—sometimes I’ll recommend a small HRV unit if folks start noticing it getting out of hand. Funny how fixing one problem can create another...
