I actually had better luck with the infrared, but maybe I’m just impatient with the heat gun. My problem is always the fumes—old putty and paint can smell awful when you hit them with high heat. Ever try one of those angled chisels for the corners? I find it’s less likely to gouge if you go slow, but man, sometimes it feels like you’re just chipping away forever.
That putty smell is the worst, right? I’ve found going slow with an angled chisel helps, but I always end up with a few tiny dings anyway. Ever tried freezing the sash before scraping? I heard it makes the old putty brittle, but haven’t worked up the nerve to try it yet. Curious if that would help cut down on fumes too?
