Do window insulation kits actually make a noticeable difference?

Last winter, my apartment was freezing—I mean, like, icebox level cold. Landlord wasn't exactly jumping to upgrade the windows, so I grabbed one of those plastic window insulation kits from the hardware store. Honestly, I thought it was gonna be one of those gimmicky things, you know, just plastic wrap and tape basically. But here's the weird part: after sealing up the windows, I swear the room felt warmer almost immediately. And over the next couple months, my heating bill dropped noticeably.

I read somewhere that even tiny gaps around a window can let in as much cold air as leaving a small window open all day long. Seems crazy, but maybe that's why these cheap kits work surprisingly well?

Still, I'm curious if others had similar experiences or if mine was just some placebo effect because I was desperate not to freeze my butt off. Anyone else tried these kits and noticed a real difference? Or maybe there's some science-y explanation someone knows about?

I've used those kits a couple winters now, and yeah, they genuinely do help. It's not just in your head. Here's the thing—windows, especially older ones, often have tiny gaps around the frames or between panes that let cold air seep in. Even if you can't feel a strong draft, those little leaks add up over time.

When you put up the plastic film and seal it tight with tape, you're basically creating an extra barrier of insulation. It traps a layer of air between the plastic and the window glass, and air is actually a pretty decent insulator. That's why double-pane windows work better than single-pane ones—same principle.

One tip though: make sure you use a hairdryer to shrink the plastic after taping it up. It tightens everything nicely and makes it almost invisible. I skipped that step once and ended up with noisy plastic flapping around every time the wind blew... lesson learned.

Anyway, glad it worked out for you too. Saving money on heating bills is always a win in my book.
