Thinking about replacing my old drafty windows (seriously, I think they’re original to my ‘70s house). I keep seeing Andersen, Pella, Marvin pop up as “top picks” but honestly, I can’t tell if it’s just marketing hype. If you had to pick, which brand would you go with? Or maybe you had a nightmare install with one? Vote below or drop a story—curious if people care more about price, looks, or just not freezing in winter.

I’m knee-deep in this same debate right now. Everyone I talk to swears by Andersen, but when I got the quote, I almost spit out my coffee. Pella seems to have a lot of fans for the price, but then I read some horror stories about seals failing after just a few years. Marvin looks great on paper, but honestly, I can’t tell if it’s worth the extra cash. At this point, I care way more about not feeling a breeze in my living room than having “prestige” windows. Still not convinced any brand is 100% headache-free…

- Ran into the same sticker shock with Andersen. Quality’s solid, but I just couldn’t justify the price for my 1980s ranch.
- Pella’s affordable, but my neighbor had to replace a few sashes after only five years. Might be installer-related, though?
- Marvin’s fiberglass line seemed promising—felt sturdy and well-insulated when I checked them out in person. Still, it’s a chunk of change.
- For me, airtightness mattered most. Ended up picking mid-tier vinyl (not a “prestige” brand) and honestly, haven’t noticed a draft since.

Curious if anyone here found installation made more difference than the window brand itself?

Honestly, I think people get too hung up on the brand.

That’s been my experience. Had a buddy grab top-shelf windows, but a sloppy install left gaps everywhere—total waste. I went with budget vinyl and a local crew who took their time. No drafts, no issues, and the house stays quiet. Brand matters, but a careful install can make even cheaper windows work just fine.

I see this all the time—folks get sold on a “premium” window and then end up with drafts because the install crew was in a hurry to make tee time. Doesn’t matter if it’s Marvin, Andersen, or something off the shelf at the big box store—if the installer’s using more caulk than actual skill, you’re gonna feel it every winter.

Personally, I’ve put in a lot of Pella and Marvin over the years. Pella’s got nice hardware, but their basic lines aren’t that different from others once you factor in labor. Marvin’s fiberglass stuff holds up well, but it costs more and honestly, most people don’t notice unless you’re really into window trivia.

Honestly, I’d take a solid local installer over a fancy brand any day. If your guy measures twice and actually cares about sealing things up, you’ll be warmer than your neighbor with “luxury” windows and a 1/4 inch gap under the sash.

And yeah, price is always a thing—sometimes it’s better to do one room right than rush the whole house with bargain-bin specials.

Couldn’t agree more. I went with mid-range windows but paid extra for a local installer who was super picky about the details. No drafts, no weird noises when it’s windy—just works. My neighbor dropped a fortune on a big brand and still complains about cold spots. Honestly, I think install matters way more than the sticker on the glass.

- Agree that install is half the battle. Even pricey windows won’t fix a sloppy job.
- We did the “research” thing, got quotes from three big brands. Ended up going with a smaller company because their installer actually walked me through every step—felt more honest, less sales-y.
- Noticed: our house (built ‘78) is WAY less drafty now, even though we didn’t pick the fanciest option.
- I’m not convinced brand matters as much as people say. Maybe if you’re in an extreme climate? But for us, attention to detail during install made the difference.
- Only gripe: took longer than expected because the guy wouldn’t rush. Worth it, but just something to keep in mind.
