I used to be one of those “I’ll just put up my shutters” people. After getting impact windows this year, I can’t imagine going back to dealing with shutters. We had a close call with a tropical storm and it was so nice not to rush and put up metal panels. I sat inside, sipped coffee, and watched the storm through my new windows instead of sweating outside with a drill 😅. The convenience factor alone is worth it, in my opinion.
This discussion has answered questions I didn’t even know I had. Kudos to all the contributors. I’m feeling much better about signing on the dotted line for my window project now.
Agreed, this needs to be pinned. Future Florida window-replacers: read this thread start to finish!
For someone like me who’s still saving up, this thread is a motivational kick to get those windows replaced sooner rather than later. I’ve been dragging my feet but seeing all these benefits... time to make some calls.
If your home was built before 1978, remember the contractor should follow lead-safe work practices (by law) when disturbing old painted surfaces (old window frames often had lead paint). Most reputable window installers are certified for that, but it’s good to be aware. They’ll use plastic sheeting, HEPA vacuums, etc., to contain any lead dust. Not an issue for newer homes, but important for older ones.
Wow, thanks everyone. With all this knowledge, I feel like a mini-expert. Can’t wait to join the impact window club and enjoy that quiet, cool home life 😎.
I moved from up north and was new to the concept of impact windows. This thread has been eye-opening. It’s like a crash course in Florida homeownership. Thank you all for the lessons!
I just want mine done before the next hurricane hits 😂. Reading this actually convinced me to pull the trigger now rather than wait. Here’s hoping for a smooth install and a quiet storm season.
Same here, @environment_jon. I’ve had plywood ready for storms in the past, but I’d much rather trust impact windows than my DIY lumber skills. Let’s do this!
Alright, got my quotes in hand (from two of the companies frequently praised here). Going to make a decision this week. Wish me luck! And I'll be referencing this thread throughout the process for sure.
