Why do my smart window sensors keep disconnecting?

Honestly, I’ve had the same debate with myself. I get why people go hardwired, but for me, the mess of running wires through plaster walls just isn’t worth it. I swapped to Zigbee sensors and they’ve been way more reliable around metal frames - maybe worth a try before drilling holes everywhere.

Did you ever have issues with battery life on the Zigbee sensors, or do they just keep going? I’ve been hesitant to switch since my WiFi ones are easy to reset, but the constant disconnects are driving me nuts. Also, did you have to add a repeater or hub somewhere to get good coverage, or did they work right out of the box? I’m wondering if my old brick walls would mess with Zigbee too...

I’ve had my Zigbee sensors running for almost two years now, and the batteries are still at about 70%, so they definitely outlast the WiFi ones I used before. The trick for me was adding a repeater in the hallway - my house has thick plaster walls, and the signal just didn’t make it otherwise. I’d say if your brick walls are anything like my old plaster, you’ll probably want at least one repeater. By the way, which brand are you looking at? Some seem to handle interference better than others.

Not to rain on the Zigbee parade, but I’ve had a different experience with battery life - at least with the cheap sensors. The ones I stuck on my windows last winter ate through their batteries in maybe 5 months. Could be the cold, or maybe they just didn’t like being next to drafty glass? Either way, don’t toss your stash of button batteries just yet.

About those repeaters… I get the idea, but honestly, in my place (also old, thick walls), adding more gadgets didn’t help as much as just moving the hub closer to the center of the house. It’s not pretty - I’ve got an ethernet cable running along a baseboard like it’s 1998 - but connection drops are way less frequent now. Sometimes low-tech wins.

Interference is real too. My microwave basically launches a denial-of-service attack every time I reheat leftovers. If you can, try to keep sensors and hubs away from big appliances or routers. Learned that one the hard way when my kitchen window sensor kept “vanishing” right at lunchtime…

Yeah, same here - cheap sensors on my old windows barely made it through half a winter before the batteries died. Drafty panes definitely didn’t help. Moved the hub too, and honestly, that did more than adding repeaters ever did. Also, my fridge seems to mess with signal more than the microwave... go figure. Sometimes it’s just trial and error with these setups.

That’s wild - I always thought microwaves were the main villain for wireless interference. I guess fridges are sneakier than they look. I had similar issues with battery life too. Turns out, cold drafts really do a number on those cheap coin cells. Moving the hub closer made a difference for me as well, but honestly, it’s like a weird science experiment half the time. Glad to know I’m not the only one fumbling around with this stuff.

That’s spot on. Large metal appliances like fridges and even water heaters are notorious for reflecting or absorbing wireless signals. I’ve noticed that even energy-efficient appliances, which tend to have more insulation and metal, can amplify the problem. It’s not just interference - sometimes these big objects create dead zones where signals just don’t penetrate. Shifting the hub a couple feet away made a measurable difference in my house. Funny how a small move can boost reliability more than any fancy mesh extender.

I ran into this exact thing when I put sensors on my back windows - signal kept dropping whenever the fridge was between the hub and the sensors. I tried moving the hub just a little, but honestly, it took a few tries before I found a “sweet spot” where the signal wasn’t bouncing off the fridge or my metal shelving. It’s wild how much difference a foot or two can make, especially in houses with newer, super-insulated appliances. I used to think it was just distance, but turns out it’s more about what’s in the way.
