- Had the same experience with outlet sealers—barely a blip on the bill. Did feel fewer cold spots near the walls though.
- Door sweeps made a bigger difference for us too. Especially in the hallway, where the draft used to hit your ankles.
- Ventilation is tricky. We went overboard one winter and got that foggy window thing... had to wipe down sills every morning. Not fun.
- Ended up cracking windows just a bit, like you did. Helped, but felt like I was undoing all my “sealing” work.

Curious, has anyone tried those trickle vents or air exchangers? I keep hearing they balance fresh air without losing too much heat, but I’m not sure if it's worth the hassle (or cost) in an older house.

Tried a couple of the basic trickle vents a while back—honestly, they’re not magic. They let in just enough air to help with the condensation, but you’re still going to feel it if you’re sitting right by the window. The real game-changer (if you can stomach the price) is an HRV or ERV system. Those actually swap stale indoor air for fresh outside air and recover some heat in the process. But, in an old house, installation can get messy fast—think cutting holes through brick or running ductwork where there’s just no space.

I’ve seen folks get by with a couple of bathroom fans on timers and just cracking a window here and there. Not perfect, but cheaper and less invasive. If you’ve already sealed everything up tight, you might need something more serious, but I wouldn’t jump straight to a full exchanger unless you’re already planning other big renos. Sometimes old houses just want to breathe a bit, you know?
