Would you look for a stated allowance or per-unit rate for wood repair, plus a written change order before extra work begins? What documentation should the contractor provide once the damage is exposed, and should work pause until the added scope and cost are approved?

I’d also want to know who’s responsible for obtaining the permit: the contractor or the homeowner.

If the inspector requires additional work or a reinspection, is that usually covered in the original scope, or handled as an extra charge? I’m curious what’s reasonable to have spelled out in writing before choosing a contractor.

I’m comparing replacement-window bids, and one contractor’s labor charge is much higher than the others. The openings vary in size, but the proposals do not describe the same installation scope. I’m trying to determine whether the difference reflects the work involved or an inflated quote.

The proposals aren’t clearly describing the same scope. One appears to be an insert installation, while another may include full-frame removal. I also need to clarify whether the crew expects to remove interior or exterior trim, use scaffolding for any upper-story openings, or repair suspected rot around the frames.

Before I compare the totals, what should I ask the contractor to document?

- Labor for each opening or a clear breakdown by installation type
- Whether the price includes full-frame removal, new flashing, insulation, and trim work
- Any allowance for structural repairs or wood rot, and how unexpected damage would be priced
- Access requirements such as scaffolding, lifts, or difficult interior access
- Disposal, cleanup, permits, and any return visits

Would photos, measurements, and a written explanation of the installation method be enough to judge whether the labor premium is reasonable? I don’t want to assume the lowest labor number is better if it leaves out full-frame work or potential repairs, but I also don’t want to accept a vague “difficult installation” surcharge without supporting details.

I’m in the middle of getting new windows for my 1950s ranch (finally, after years of drafts and rattling frames), and I’ve narrowed it down to two bids. The first is from a small local guy - his price is about 20% less than the bigger company, and he seems super responsive, but he’s only got a handful of reviews online (all positive, but not many). The second bid is from a well-known regional company. They’re more expensive, but they’ve got tons of reviews, a longer warranty, and their rep was really polished. Downside: their schedule’s a bit tighter, and honestly, the sales pitch felt a little pushy.

I keep going back and forth. Part of me wants to support the smaller business and save some cash, but I’m also nervous about what happens if there’s an issue down the road. On the other hand, the bigger company has that “safe” feeling, but I’m not made of money either, you know? Both are offering similar brands of windows (not the absolute cheapest stuff), so I don’t think quality is wildly different.

Has anyone been in this boat? Did you go with the local guy or play it safe with the established company? Any regrets or things you wish you’d asked before signing?

Like, the first contractor just rattled off a number and barely explained what was included - turns out, they didn’t even factor in removing the old frames (which is apparently a big deal with my 1950s house). Another one showed me a sample window but didn’t mention installation timelines or warranty stuff until I specifically asked.

Kinda kicking myself for not having a better list of questions ready. Did anyone else run into this? What did you wish you’d asked before signing anything? Any “gotchas” that caught you off guard?

Caught this article in my local paper about a family who got hit with a bunch of “surprise” fees after their window install. Apparently, the quote they got didn’t include disposal of the old windows, or the trim work, and the final bill was way higher than expected. It made me realize how many little things can sneak in if you don’t know what to ask.

When I got quotes for my own place last fall, I just assumed “installation” covered everything - turns out, nope. I had to specifically ask if they’d haul away the old windows, and even then, one company wanted to charge extra for caulking (seriously?). Is this just normal for home renos now?

Kinda curious, what are the weirdest or most unexpected add-ons you’ve seen in window quotes? Or, if you’ve been through it, what do you wish you’d asked before signing?

Caught this news segment the other night about window companies doing these “limited time” flash sales, and it got me thinking. They made it sound like you could save a ton if you jump on these offers, but then they interviewed a few homeowners who said the discounts weren’t as big as advertised once all the fees and add-ons showed up. One guy said he got quoted $900 per window, “discounted” from $1200, but then the final invoice was almost the same as his neighbor’s who didn’t get a sale.

I’m starting to wonder if these promos are just marketing tricks. Has anyone actually scored a legit deal on replacement windows this way? Or is it better to just negotiate directly or wait for off-season pricing? Curious if anyone’s managed to get a real bargain or if it’s all smoke and mirrors.

Picture this: the old, drafty windows in my 80s ranch are practically whistling at me every time the wind picks up. I finally cave and call a few companies, but every quote makes me want to crawl under a blanket and pretend I’m fine with the breeze. So here’s where it gets interesting - I start haggling. Like, actual back-and-forth, “can you do better than that?” conversations. One guy offers free installation if I sign today, another throws in upgraded glass, but I can’t shake the feeling there’s more wiggle room.

Let’s make this a story: imagine you’re negotiating for your dream windows, but the sales rep is a retired poker champion who never blinks. What tricks (or accidental blunders) do you pull to get a better deal? Or maybe you go the other way - ever tried to lowball and have it backfire hilariously? Curious how others would play this out…
