Another thing I ran into: not just late starts, but early quits. The crew working on my windows would show up late morning and then pack up by 3 PM sharp every day. They were nice guys and all, but I noticed they rarely put in a full day on my project. It was like they treated the timeline as flexible on both ends – start late, leave early. No wonder a job that was supposed to take 3 days stretched into 5. I kept thinking, if they'd just come on time and stay a normal workday, we'd be done already! It's frustrating watching the inefficiency in action.

My window installers were never exactly on time, but at least they were consistent about being 15 minutes late every day 😅. After the first day, I basically adjusted my expectations and it bothered me a lot less. I'd rather have that than a crew that is an hour late one day, then early the next without notice. In my case 8 AM always became 8:15 AM. Annoying? A bit, but I could live with it since everything else went smoothly and they gave me a heads up if they'd be more than 15 minutes off. Maybe my bar is low, but in contractor-land, consistency (even if not perfect) was somewhat comforting.

For those recommending Karoly or Pro Tech, did you find their pricing reasonable? I'm definitely willing to pay a bit extra for a company that's punctual and professional, but I'm curious if their quotes were in line with others or significantly higher. Reliability is worth something to me, but I also have a budget to consider. So, anyone who got quotes from them (or used them) notice how their prices compared to other contractors? It's not directly about punctuality, I know, but it sort of is – because sometimes you get what you pay for when it comes to service quality.

@illustrator24 Great question. In my case, I got quotes from three companies for my windows: one was a random smaller contractor, one was Karoly, and one was another mid-sized local firm. Karoly's quote was actually right in the middle – not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. I think Pro Tech was similar for a friend of mine; they weren't bargain-basement low, but they were competitive with other reputable companies. Honestly, the slightly higher cost (if any) was worth the peace of mind. I'd rather pay 5-10% more to not have the stress of constant delays. So yeah, from what I've seen, you're not necessarily paying a huge premium for the companies that have their act together. They just run a tighter ship.

I was really worried about getting my windows done before hurricane season kicked in last year (wanted those impact windows in place by June). The contractor I chose promised to have everything completed by late May. I was holding my breath because any slip-up would mean pushing into summer storms. But they actually delivered! Finished the job on May 25th, just as the rains were starting the next week. That punctual completion wasn't just a convenience – it was a huge relief for our peace of mind going into storm season. Sometimes meeting the promised deadline is about more than just convenience; in Florida it can be about safety too.

One thing to keep in mind is how contractor delays can have a domino effect. I had lined up a window replacement and then a painting crew to come the following week to repaint the trim and walls around those new windows. Well, the window guys ended up taking an extra three days beyond their original finish date. That meant I had to reschedule the painters last minute 😑. It was a headache coordinating that, and the painters weren't too happy either (they had a gap in their schedule because of my delay). So, when a contractor isn't punctual or drags out the timeline, it can mess up more than just their job – it can throw off your other projects too. Lesson learned: build some buffer time between sequential projects, just in case.

(Contractor perspective here) I'm actually a project manager for a window installation company in the Tampa Bay area. I stumbled on this thread and thought I might add some insight. Scheduling is genuinely one of the hardest parts of our job – there's weather, the occasional crew member emergency, sometimes a previous project runs over, etc. That said, the companies with good management will buffer for those issues and keep clients informed. We always build in a little cushion in our schedule in case something unexpected happens, so we don't have to delay the next customer. And when we do run late (hey, it happens), a quick phone call to the homeowner goes a long way. Trust me, we hate making people wait; a little planning and communication makes all the difference. So if a contractor consistently can't show up on time, it's often a sign of poor planning on their part, not just bad luck.

@shadow_ghost Thank you for offering that perspective! It's nice to hear from the contractor side of things. It sounds like the reliable companies (maybe like the ones folks praised here) are doing exactly what you said – planning well and keeping customers posted. I wish more contractors took that approach. As a homeowner, I don't expect perfection, just honesty and heads-ups. When they plan buffers and communicate, it's so much less stressful. Kudos to the contractors who get it right!

Small update from my side – after reading this thread, I actually called Pro Tech Windows & Doors for an estimate. They scheduled a consultation for 10 AM last Tuesday, and would you believe the rep was knocking on my door at 9:59 AM? 😃 Punctual from the get-go! The quote appointment went great (no high-pressure sales, by the way), and I decided to hire them for my window project. If their installation crew is as prompt as their salesperson, I think I'm in good hands. I'll report back once the job is done, but I'm feeling optimistic I won't have the timing headaches some others have had.

On the flip side of @design_tyler's experience – I had a contractor no-show on the initial estimate appointment! That was a big red flag 😬. We had set a meeting for a Saturday morning, and they just never came or called. I gave them a second chance (rescheduled for the next week), and they were 45 minutes late to that one. Needless to say, I did NOT hire that company. If they can't even be on time when trying to win your business, imagine how they'd be after getting it. Sometimes the way they handle estimates tells you everything you need to know.
