We installed vinyl windows about five years ago, and honestly, they've held up better than I expected. We went with a darker shade—kind of a deep charcoal—and I was pretty nervous about fading too. But so far, nothing noticeable. Granted, our house doesn't get blasted by direct sunlight all day, so maybe that helps.

Funny you mentioned noise reduction...we didn't even think about it either until after installation. Our neighbor across the street has this ancient lawn mower that sounds like it's powered by angry bees, and now it's just a faint hum in the background. Definitely an unexpected perk.

Appearance-wise, the vinyl still looks pretty sharp. I do hose them down occasionally when I'm watering the plants, but that's about it for maintenance. My brother-in-law went with wood windows around the same time, and he's already had to repaint once. They look great, but man, that's more work than I'd want to deal with.

Your experience pretty much mirrors mine. I went vinyl about seven years ago, and honestly, zero regrets. Wood looks amazing, no doubt, but the upkeep just isn't worth it for me. My neighbor has wood frames and every couple years he's out there sanding and repainting...looks exhausting. Vinyl's been solid—quiet, easy to clean, and still looks sharp. Glad yours are holding up well too, especially with that darker color.

Fair point, but honestly, modern wood frames aren't as high-maintenance as they used to be. With the right finish and proper install, you're not sanding every other year...more like every 5-7 years. Still manageable imo.

That's true, especially if you go with higher-quality finishes. Have you looked into aluminum-clad wood frames at all? They give you the warmth and look of wood on the inside, but the exterior is aluminum, so no sanding or repainting needed outside. We installed some about 6 years ago, still looking great...and I haven't touched them yet. Might be worth considering if upkeep's your main concern.

We went vinyl when we replaced ours about three years back, mostly because I was worried about upkeep (first-time homeowner nerves, I guess...). But honestly, after seeing my neighbor's aluminum-clad wood frames, I'm kinda wishing I'd spent more time researching. Hers look amazing—inside and out—and she hasn't had to do anything special to maintain them. If I had a do-over, I'd probably lean toward those for the best of both worlds.

Gotta admit, they do look great, but my brother went aluminum-clad wood and still grumbles about the upfront cost. Vinyl's been solid for me so far—cheap, easy, and no regrets yet... knock on wood (or vinyl?).
