Here’s what worked for me when I swapped out windows last year—step by step:
1. Figure out where condensation is actually coming from. Like you said, it’s not always the window itself. In my case, a leaky vent was dumping humid air right onto the glass.
2. If you’re leaning casement, they do seal tighter and are less drafty in general. But I had to make sure nothing blocked the crank handles inside (my old blinds were a pain). Worth checking before committing.
3. Double-hungs are easier to clean from inside, which matters if you’ve got a second story or hate ladders as much as I do.
4. Humidity control made a bigger difference than window type for me—ran the bathroom fan longer and set the humidifier lower in winter.
5. Maintenance-wise, casements needed some adjusting after a couple years—mine got stiff—but nothing major.
I’d say think about your cleaning habits and airflow quirks before picking. Both types from Pella have solid ratings; just comes down to what fits your space and routine best.

That’s a big one for me—my old house has tall windows upstairs and I’m not exactly nimble on a ladder. Did you notice any difference in noise reduction between the two? I’ve heard casements can be a bit quieter because of the seal, but not sure if it’s really noticeable. Also, how’s the hardware holding up? My neighbor’s Pella cranks got stiff after just a couple winters, which makes me wonder about long-term maintenance...

I was wondering about that too. My cousin swears her casements are quieter, but when I tried them at her place, I couldn’t really tell unless a truck went by. Maybe my ears aren’t picky enough? As for hardware, I’m also nervous about those crank handles—my friend’s got one that basically needs WD-40 every spring. Double-hungs seem simpler, but maybe less “tight” on cold days… decisions, decisions.
