Anyone else amazed by how much warmth south-facing windows add in winter?

We moved into our new place last summer, and honestly, I didn't think much about window orientation at the time. But now that we're in the thick of winter, I'm kinda blown away by how much heat we're getting from our south-facing windows. On sunny days, even when it's freezing outside, the living room stays surprisingly warm without cranking up the heat. Yesterday afternoon, I actually had to crack open a window for a bit because it got too toasty—never thought I'd be doing that in January, haha.

It's funny because our old apartment faced north and was always chilly and gloomy in winter. Now I'm realizing what a difference orientation makes. Curious if anyone else has noticed this kind of passive heating effect in their homes. Would love to hear if it's made a noticeable difference for you too.

Interesting to hear your experience, but honestly, I've found south-facing windows can be a bit of a double-edged sword. At our last place, the living room faced directly south, and yeah, winter afternoons were cozy...but come summer, it was brutal. Even with blinds and curtains, the room turned into an oven by midday. We ended up installing reflective film on the windows just to keep things bearable. Orientation definitely matters—but it's not always sunshine and roses (pun intended).

Haha, totally get what you're saying. I've had similar experiences—south-facing windows are great until they're not. We put up some heavy blackout curtains last summer, and it helped a bit, but honestly, reflective film sounds like a smarter move. Still, gotta admit, those sunny winter afternoons almost make the summer hassle worth it...almost. Good call on the pun, btw.
