Anyone tried those see-through solar windows for their home?

That haze is exactly what worried me about those panels. I haven’t tried them myself, but I did see a neighbor’s setup last fall—looked kind of cool at first, but after a while, it started to look like someone left a foggy film on the glass. He said cleaning didn’t really help much either. For the money, I’m with you... I’d rather just keep my regular windows and throw a couple of standard solar panels up top where nobody really sees them.

I get that the tech is improving and all, but right now it seems like you’re trading off looks for something that doesn’t even produce as much power as a normal panel. Maybe in a few years they’ll figure out how to make them actually clear—or at least less “frosty”—but for now, I’m sticking with what works. If I wanted frosted glass, I’d just buy frosted glass, you know?

- Totally get what you mean about the haze. I checked out a demo house last year—same thing, looked slick at first, but up close it just wasn’t the same as regular glass.
- My main concern’s always been maintenance. If you have to baby your windows just to keep them looking halfway decent, that’s a hard pass for me.
- Output numbers are another issue. From what I’ve seen, those see-through panels aren’t even close to what you get with traditional rooftop ones. Not worth the money if you’re actually trying to offset your bill.
- Aesthetics matter too... especially if you’ve got a street-facing window. Frosty or cloudy glass just isn’t my thing unless it’s intentional for privacy.
- Maybe in a few years they’ll nail the tech, but right now? I’d rather stick with tried-and-true panels on the roof or garage. Less hassle, better performance, and nobody’s staring at weird-looking windows every day.
- Only upside I can think of is if you’re really tight on roof space, but otherwise... feels like more of a novelty than a practical upgrade at this point.

- Totally agree on performance—seems like a lot of hype for not much payoff right now.
- I do wonder if anyone’s seen these hold up over a couple winters? I’m in the Midwest, so durability with all the freeze-thaw cycles is a big deal for me.
- For now, I’m sticking with my standard panels. But if the tech improves, maybe it’ll make sense down the road... Has anyone actually seen a version that looks just like regular glass?

I’ve put in a couple of these see-through solar windows for clients over the last two years, mostly as a “let’s see how it goes” experiment. Honestly, in Midwest winters, they’re holding up about as well as standard double-pane glass, but you do have to watch out for the seals—one install had a bit of fogging after a rough freeze-thaw stretch. As for blending in, the latest ones aren’t quite invisible, but unless you’re up close, most folks wouldn’t notice. Still, I’d say the energy payoff isn’t there yet compared to regular panels. If you’re mainly after aesthetics and novelty, they’re fun... but I wouldn’t bank on them for serious power just yet.

I actually looked into these when we were redoing the sunroom last year. Ended up passing—just seemed like a lot of money for something that’s still kinda experimental. If you’re in it for the energy savings, I’d say stick with regular solar panels for now. The idea is neat, but I’m not sure I trust the long-term durability, especially with our wild temp swings. If you do go for it, maybe keep an eye on those seals and be ready for some maintenance down the line.

— This was my hang-up too.
- Efficiency isn’t there yet. Last I checked, you get less output per square foot than roof panels.
- Durability in wild temps? That’d make me nervous. Seals and coatings could be a weak point long-term.
- If you want max energy savings, regular panels are still the safer bet. Maybe worth revisiting in a few years as the tech matures.

I get the hesitation—cost and efficiency are big factors. I’ve seen a couple projects where folks tried these out, and honestly, the novelty is really cool but yeah, output per square foot isn’t matching what you get on a roof. Still, I’m curious to see how the seals hold up after a few freeze-thaw cycles. If you like experimenting and don’t mind paying extra for early tech, it could be fun… but for now, tried-and-true panels are probably the safer play. That said, it’s awesome to see people testing new stuff—someone’s gotta push things forward.

I’ve looked into these a bit and yeah, the price tag is a killer right now. The idea is neat for modern builds, but with my older windows I’d worry about leaks or drafts over time. Maybe in a few years when they’ve worked out the kinks. For now, regular panels just make more sense for what you get back.

I hear you on the sticker shock. My place is pushing 40 years old, and honestly, I already get a draft if someone sneezes too close to the living room window. The idea of cutting-edge tech in these old frames just makes me picture dollar bills floating out with the breeze. Anyone actually had luck retrofitting these things, or is it more trouble than it’s worth? Regular panels at least don’t mess with my questionable window seals.

I’ve wrestled with this exact dilemma—my house is late ‘70s, and the windows are original. I get the “draft if you sneeze” thing... sometimes I think the glass is just there for looks at this point. Last winter, I actually tried retrofitting one of those new-fangled solar film things (not a full window replacement, but a peel-and-stick see-through panel) just to see if it’d make any difference. It was a fun experiment, but honestly, the draftiness kind of killed any potential gains. The film itself was easy enough to stick on, but my seals are so sketchy that I’m pretty sure half the heat—and whatever energy that panel was collecting—just slipped right out.

I did look into full solar window replacements, but the cost made me do a double-take. My frames aren’t even square anymore, so getting anything custom would be a nightmare. Anyone else notice how these new tech solutions always assume your house is already in decent shape? I mean, if you’ve got solid, modern frames and good insulation, maybe it’s worth it. But in my case, I feel like I’d have to gut half my living room just to get things up to snuff before even thinking about solar glass.

On the flip side, regular panels were way easier for me to deal with. Not pretty, but at least they don’t care if your windows are wonky or not. Curious if anyone’s managed to make these solar windows work in an older place without redoing everything else first? Maybe there’s some trick I missed...
