Window woes and the mystery crack

Last weekend, I was rearranging furniture in my living room (you know, as one does when boredom strikes), and I noticed something weird near the window frame. There's this hairline crack creeping up from the corner, and when I poked around a bit more, the drywall felt kinda soft and crumbly. Not exactly reassuring.
Now my imagination's running wild - like maybe there's some secret hidden behind there, or maybe it's just water damage from that storm last month. But then again, could be termites or something equally horrifying. I'm tempted to open it up myself, but knowing my luck, I'd probably make it worse.
Anyone else ever stumbled onto something like this? Or maybe someone wants to spin this into a creepy short story or something... could be fun.

Had something similar happen last year - noticed a weird crack near my kitchen window. Thought it was nothing at first, but drywall felt soft too. Turned out to be water damage from a tiny leak in the flashing outside. Not saying yours isn't secretly hiding treasure or creepy crawlies, but probably worth checking the outside seals first before you go full demolition mode... learned that the hard way.
Check the exterior seals and flashing before opening soft drywall. For similar damage, note whether the crack or dampness changes after heavy rain, then use a moisture meter around the frame and sill. Readings that return after rain suggest an active leak; a dry, localized area may be old damage that still needs replacing, but not necessarily more demolition.
