WINDOW REPLACEMENT ALMOST COST ME A FINGER - ANYONE ELSE HAD CLOSE CALLS?

Last weekend I finally decided to replace the old windows in my garage. Watched a few YouTube tutorials, thought "how hard could it be?" Well, turns out pretty hard if you're not careful. I was prying out the old frame and the glass shattered - luckily I had gloves on but still got a nasty cut. Could've been way worse though...you know, like losing a finger or something. Anyone else have any scary DIY window replacement stories or tips to avoid another disaster?

Haha, famous last words right there... Glad you're mostly okay though. Window replacements can be deceptively tricky - glass has a mind of its own sometimes. I learned the hard way to always tape up the glass before prying anything loose. It doesn't stop every accident, but it definitely helps keep shards from flying everywhere. Anyway, props for giving it a shot yourself; next time will probably go smoother.

Been there myself... those DIY vids always make it look way easier than reality. First time I tried replacing a window, ended up cracking the frame and slicing my palm - nothing serious, but lesson learned. Good on you for giving it a go though; next attempt usually feels way less intimidating. Just keep some band-aids handy, haha.

Yeah, those DIY videos skip over a lot of the tricky bits. First time I replaced a window, I nearly dropped the whole pane trying to balance it solo - definitely underestimated how awkward they are to handle alone. Quick tip: always have someone else around to help steady things, even if they're just holding stuff in place. And gloves... seriously underrated. Took me a couple tries before I got comfortable with the whole process, but now it's pretty straightforward. Good on you for giving it a shot though, you'll nail it next time for sure.

The “have someone steady it” tip matters most when the whole glazed unit is still in the opening. A safer setup is usually to remove the sash, or take the pane out according to that window’s design, before prying on the frame. That way you’re not trying to control a heavy, awkward piece of glass while it’s under pressure.

Some older or fixed windows don’t come apart cleanly, though. If the pane can’t be supported securely or the removal path isn’t obvious, stop there and get a second person or a pro. Gloves help with shards, but they won’t prevent a pane from twisting, dropping, or pinching a hand.
