What would you do if your window suddenly won't stay up?

Imagine you’re trying to get some fresh air and the old sash window just slams shut every time. Like, let’s say the balance thingies inside are shot—would you try to fix them yourself or just call someone in? I’ve heard you can order replacement balances but honestly, the idea of taking apart the window frame freaks me out a bit. Has anyone actually done this without accidentally breaking more stuff? Curious if it’s worth the stress or if I’m just overthinking it.

I’ve swapped out a bunch of those balances over the years—honestly, it’s not as scary as it seems once you get into it. First time I tried, I was sure I’d crack the glass or mess up the trim, but with a little patience and some YouTube backup, it went alright. Only tricky part was keeping track of the tiny screws. If you’re handy with a screwdriver and don’t mind a bit of fiddling, it’s doable—but if your windows are old or painted shut, sometimes calling in help saves a lot of headaches (and paint chips).
