Rope caulk, huh? I tried it on one window last year and it did help with drafts, but I found it left a bit of sticky residue when I pulled it off in the spring. Maybe I pressed it in too hard? The shrink film was annoying to install, but once I got the hang of it, it stayed put. Still, I get what you mean about condensation—mine fogged up too, just not as bad as before. Guess there’s no perfect fix for old windows...

That sticky residue from rope caulk is pretty common, especially if it’s pressed in hard or left on a bit too long. Usually, a bit of rubbing alcohol takes care of it, but yeah, it’s not ideal. Shrink film can be a hassle at first, but most folks get quicker with practice. You’re right—none of these are perfect fixes for old windows. Sometimes, even the best stopgaps just buy you another season or two before something more permanent is needed... but every little bit helps in the meantime.
