Sticker shock at the hardware store: are window costs getting out of hand?

- Totally feel this. I got all excited about “energy efficient” windows when I moved in - figured I’d be set for winter. Wallet took a hit, but the drafts stuck around.
- Turns out, my 1950s ranch had more air leaks than I realized. Ended up crawling around with a smoke pen and found cold air pouring in from outlets, the crawlspace door, even under the baseboards.
- Honestly, sealing up those spots with weatherstripping and a few cans of spray foam made a bigger difference than the fancy windows. Not as flashy, but way cheaper.
- Not saying new windows are a scam, but if your house is still leaking everywhere else, it’s like wearing a raincoat with holes in your boots.
- If I had to do it over, I’d start with the small stuff first... then maybe upgrade the windows if I had cash left.
- The hardware store prices lately are wild, too. Sometimes I wonder if I should’ve just learned to make my own storm windows instead.

I hear you on the “unsexy” fixes. When we first moved in, I got all jazzed about new windows too - thought I’d be warm as toast. Turns out, the biggest draft was coming from the attic access and the old dog door nobody uses. A couple tubes of caulk and some foam tape did more than all that window money.
